VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Shen Yun Performing Arts won kind words from businessmen and birthday revelers after staging its first of seven shows in Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Friday night.

Michael Ruvio, a retired restaurateur who owned seven restaurants on Vancouver’s busiest downtown streets including Robson, Davie Street, and Granville, was among those praising the performance.

“I like it, she liked it,” he said, referring to his Chinese companion, Mary Jiang. “We come because it is her birthday, we are trying to celebrate the occasion.” Mr. Ruvio said he and Ms. Jiang thoroughly enjoyed the dancing and music of the show.

“We like it very much,” said Ms. Jiang, who recently left China where she was a dentist. She wanted to be dancer when she was younger.
“She want to be a dancer but her father said no,” said Mr. Ruvio. He finished by saying he and Ms. Jiang were huge fans of the performance!

Mr. and Mrs. Feridon, originally from Iran, also attended the performance as part of a birthday celebration. “It is his birthday next week,” explained Mrs. Feridon.

“I am happy because I saw this show—very nice, beautiful,” exclaimed her husband.

“I like this show. It was very nice. This is my first time. It was very nice, very wonderful,” said his wife. “Especially the very nice design of the dresses. Everything was very harmonious,” added Mr. Feridon, who owns a commercial painting business.

Mr. Harnett, who owns an airfreight business, said he liked the show “very much.  The music and the dance and everything, it was quite enjoyable.”

When asked if anything stood out for him, Mr. Harnett said, “The music is excellent. The color, presentation and dance, I enjoyed it all.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts will stage six more shows in Vancouver before continuing on to Calgary and Edmonton.
