The tens of thousands of entries submitted to the Chinese International Photography Competition were narrowed down to 120 outstanding photos during the preliminary round. The qualified photos will advance to the next round and be displayed at the American Ukrainian Research Institute in New York on December 11 and 12.
The Chinese International Photography Competition, part of NTDTV’s nine competition series, received works from 28 countries and many professional photographers. The co-chairs of judges’ panel, Mrs. Yi Luoxun and Mr. Dai Bing, expressed that the competition’s objective is to promote a cultural exchange within the community of Chinese photography enthusiasts. They stated that the purpose of this competition is to revive traditional culture and art
The co-chairs hope that this will uplift and enrich the art with philosophies that emphasize goodwill, beauty, brightness and the state of nature, thereby reviving the traditional values of ideal aesthetics.
They also revealed how the panel of 11 judges processed and rated the entries. According to the co-chairs, every submission was scored by each judge independently. The qualifying photos were then evaluated based on theme, composition, tone, lighting and aesthetic connotation.
After individual scoring, the works were then discussed among the panel of judges. Their discussion revolved around whether and where the photos fit within the four main categories of the competition. These categories are: society and humanity, nature and landscapes, architectures and views, and people and portraits.
The co-chairs explained, “We need to ask what is traditional philosophy and how does that manifest in the human condition? How should society be? How should the condition of human life be? We are looking for all of these answers in this competition, and we feel it can be adequately manifested in photography.”
The organizers plan to hold this photography competition annually. The co-chairs said, “For next year, the participants will have a better understanding of the competition’s criteria. The standards for artistic expression will be even higher for next year.”
