TAIPEI, Taiwan—Mr. Yao Zhaoxuan, a well-known chef of Chaozhou cuisine in Tapei, and his wife, watched the Shen Yun Performing Arts show on the evening of March 1. In an interview during intermission, Mr. Yao said, “I like every program of the show very much. After watching the first three programs, I was moved to tears. Seeing the reproduction of ancient history on the stage, I was affected so strongly that it is hard to describe.”

He said the dances, such as The Udumbara’s Bloom, Dance of the Yi and Welcoming Spring, had enlightened him to design several beautiful, elegant floral dishes. He said the show reminded him of “Hundred Flowers Cuisine” [a dish offered to a royal family in ancient times], and he would like to watch the Shen Yun show again next year.

Learning the culinary skills of Chaozhou cuisine and banquet from his father since he was young, Mr. Yao was invited to attend the opening ceremony of the International Chinese Culinary Competition last year.

He paid close attention to and enjoyed every program of the Shen Yun show. The characters Monkey King [Sun Wukong], Hua Mulan, Li Bai, and Ji Gong were all familiar to him. The silver-white Udumbara’s bloom, the multicolored skirts of the Yi’s dance, and the dances in Welcoming Spring all prompted Mr. Yao to use dumpling wrappers to make various shapes of flowers to decorate dishes. He said the gowns used in The Mystical Phoenix look like a lotus flower when the dancers sat on the floor. The Udumbara’s bloom was so beautiful that he would like to use lily petals to create a new dish.

The programs in the first half of the show deeply affected Mr. Yao. He was also touched by the program Monk Ji Gong Abducts the Bride, in which all people in a village were saved. Having dedicated his entire life to culinary techniques, Mr. Yao did not forget his profession even when he was sitting in the show. His culinary experience, accumulated from more than 60 years of work, was lifted to another level after watching the Shen Yun performance.
