Jay-Z signed the young star to his Roc Nation label last month, according to MTV News.
“I was like, ‘Man, that record’s a smash,’” he said on the Ryan Seacrest radio show, according to MTV. “And then [Roc Nation partner] Jay Brown said, ‘She’s 9,’ and I was like, ‘Whoa!’ And [then] he was like, ‘She’s Will and Jada’s daughter,’ and I was like, ‘Whoa!’ and it just went from there.”
Smith said that the meaning of the song means to be an individual and “be yourself,” she told Seacrest.
