Unclaimed Baggage is an unusual kind of shop. The Scottsboro, Alabama, spot draws bargain hunters from around the country; it buys and then sells items that airlines aren’t able to reunite with their owners—those comprise 0.5 percent of all unclaimed bags.

As you can imagine, what the Unclaimed Baggage staff uncovers is eclectic. Here are some examples: moose antlers, a full Scottish kilt, a 5.8-carat diamond set in a platinum band (and packed in a sock!), and literal treasures such as a Limoges vase, sold for $80 and later valued at $18,000.

On Nov. 2, Unclaimed Baggage will draw sports enthusiasts and bargain hunters for its anticipated Winter and Ski event, which will be accompanied by giveaways, games, and donuts and coffee to give shoppers a boost of energy. Brands such as REI, Marmot, and Rossignol will be sold at 20–80 percent below retail price.

The 40,000-square-foot store is divided by departments and has an adjoining Etc. store with three floors, including a “roll-outs” section where deals arrive every hour.
