LONDON—Shen Yun Performing Arts, acclaimed as the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, is currently performing in London as part of its 2011 World Tour. The company seeks to revive traditional Chinese culture and presents spectacular story-based dance depicting ancient legends and modern-day tales of courage.
Hosted in both English and Chinese, each program is given a brief introduction, enabling Westerners and Chinese alike to better understand the nuances of Chinese culture.
Mr. Neil Hunt, a former president of the National Toastmaster’s Association, went to the show on the opening night, April 5. A toastmaster is a master of ceremonies who introduces entertainment acts and Mr. Hunt’s background is in presenting events of distinction. Commenting on the Shen Yun presenters, he said: “I think the explanation was very good between the various acts, between the dances. I’ve read my programme but of course you can’t refer to it in the dark so it obviously brings it to life. The little explanation tells you what’s going on. There’s humour there. It links very nicely.”
Shen Yun is a large-scale production featuring 90 dancers, musicians and singers as well as a live orchestra. Mr. Hunt regretted that his wife could not make the show as he felt it was “absolutely marvellous.”
“It was a wonderful show and it was entertaining. The cast were just so athletic and supple. I wish I could be like that. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think that I will come to one of these again. It was fantastic. They should be very proud.”
Referring to his wife, he added, “I'd bring her, I guess because I love her.”
