The Ruby Suns’ last outing Sea Lion garnered much praise for its sunshine-heavy psychedelic pop. Now, three years on, Ryan Mcphun’s New Zealand based band return touting a much more electronic sound. Comparisons to kindred eclectic spirits Animal Collective will no doubt be drawn and vocally Mcphun sounds not unlike Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth but with the fun dial turned up to 10. ‘How Kids Fail’ showcases this clash of vocal and musical sounds, coming on something like the Beach Boys on a visit to a club, as does ‘Cranberry’ where euro techno meets Panda Bear. Truly unique and immense fun, a thoroughly enjoyable mess.
