During World War II, Ray (Skeet Ulrich), a farmer in rural Colorado, agrees to quietly marry Olivia “Livy” Dunne (Keri Russell), a headstrong, Denver-bred girl he’s never met. That’s to shield her from the scandal of an unwed pregnancy.

Her self-absorbed sister Abby (Jane McGregor) visits because her husband’s off to war. She finds Livy, a wannabe archaeologist, aching to see the world and feeling stifled. Abby suggests portraying kind, hardworking Ray as an abusive drunk to justify Livy deserting him and escaping back to Denver.
