As a young girl, author and retired teacher Dorothy Fletcher relocated with her family from Illinois to North Florida. Her trusty Schwinn bicycle was the perfect mode of transportation for Jacksonville’s then-ample forestry and the area’s Old King’s Road, built by the British prior to the Revolutionary War. She and her friends would spend hours playing outside, building forts, and pretending to valiantly fight off enemy forces.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Composition and Literature at Florida State University, Fletcher taught students in the Duval County school system for more than 35 years.
