SYDNEY, Australia—For Indonesian dancer Ms. Hidayati it was a pleasant surprise that her boyfriend took her to see Saturday night’s performance of the Shen Yun Divine Performing Arts at the Parade Theatre, Kensington..

“He took me here as a surprise, so I didn’t know I was coming tonight. … I’m glad he took me here, because he knows that I like dancing,” she said.

While Ms. Hidayati has danced since the age of five, she has never experienced anything like Shen Yun, and it has inspired her imagination. “It was like: Wow! I couldn’t describe it, it’s very good,” she said.

“The dancing is very, very excellent. I love the set. I’m glad that I came to tonight to see it,” said Ms. Hidayati.

The show, she said, touched her heart—especially the scene Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution about the father who is killed by the Chinese security police because of his peaceful belief in the Falun Gong spiritual practice.

Other highlights of the night’s performance for Ms Hidayati were Mulan Joins the Battle and The Monkey King Triumphs.

“I learned a lot about the soul, especially all the stories—I really didn’t know before about Falun Gong or about Mulan. A few stories I knew about, but it is a learning experience for me—learning more about Chinese culture,” she said.

Two others who attended Saturday night’s performance were pleasantly surprised by what they saw.

A school teacher named Gail said that she had never seen anything like Shen Yun and added that it was: “very enjoyable, very enjoyable.

“The costumes are beautiful. I’m loving all of it. The background is fantastic … The way the characters come in and out of the background is very, very special,” she said.

Michael, an electronic engineer originally from Yugoslavia said: “I appreciate all the parts [of Shen Yun]. ... I was fascinated with all parts, and I think is one message at least that I get from this performance is freedom and hope—and within that for China’s people.”
