CINCINNATI, Ohio—On Saturday, March 6, the New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts show received a warm welcome as it returned to Cincinnati, Ohio. Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company received a very warm reception and two curtain calls and standing ovations.  Jan Sherbin, a freelance media editor, joined the highly enthusiastic audience that packed the Cincinnati Music Hall.

After seeing Shen Yun for the first time, she wished to learn more about Chinese culture. “I thought it was very colorful, lively and pleasing. I wished that I knew more about Chinese culture, because I think some of it went by me that shouldn’t, so I would be interested in learning more.”

Ms. Sherbin was impressed with the unique blend of Chinese and Western instruments that is Shen Yun’s music. “Well, one thing I was surprised about ... there was a blend of Western and Eastern, they said that about the instruments in the orchestra, the Western and Eastern. Their singing in particular. So I was surprised when I was listening and I think it was a very interesting way to blend the Western and Eastern in one show that was representing China.”

Ms. Sherbin said he enjoyed seeing traditional values that were always part of classical Chinese culture. “There was a lot of emphasis on harmony of the people and the nature. So you could feel that and you could tell that was very important. I think that was clear.”

She felt seeing the show would be a good introduction to Chinese culture. “Certainly people interested in Chinese culture, either because they were already there, or because this is a good introduction.”

She felt there were many things in the show that she couId apply to her life. “I think there was a lot of emphasis in the colors and just looking more around you—paying more attention to what’s around you and putting things that are around you, the colors, the way things move the way the people interact with nature. We’re too busy to pay attention to that usually.”

Ms. Sherbin recommended that others see Shen Yun. “Anyone interested in dance, folktales and beautiful visuals.”
