TORONTO—Toronto audiences on Sunday will have the chance to hear the world premiere of a new orchestral work composed by nine-year-old Aidan Gupta, first violinist with the Mooredale Junior Orchestra.
The two-and-a-half-minute piece, A Wistful Journey, depicts “a boy looking out the window at the moonlight, and thinking of happy memories,” explains Gupta in a press release.
“A Wistful Journey is in E minor, and is a lyrical piece,” said Mooredale Youth Orchestra conductor William Rowson in the release. “It is not fast and flashy, but is written with an impressive amount of detail and musicality, especially considering Aidan wrote it when he was only eight.”
Rowson has been nurturing the orchestra’s young members (6-12 years old) to create original compositions. His goal is to perform an entire program of original compositions.
The Mooredale Youth Orchestra program has three orchestras composed of over 100 musicians, aged 6-20. Artistic director Anton Kuerti describes the aim of the program on the orchestra’s website. “Our youth orchestra programs give serious young musicians a chance to prepare orchestral selections and perform them at a high standard.”
The Mooredale Youth Orchestras will perform its last concert of the season on June 13 at 3 p.m. at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts.
The Junior Orchestra will perform Mozart’s Divertimento in G Major, while the Intermediate Orchestra will give a rendition of Kleine Suite in D Major by Georg Philipp Telemann, under the direction of Clare Carbery. The Youth Orchestra, conducted by Anton Kuerti, will conclude the program with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B flat Major.
