PASADENA, Calif.—As Divine Performing Arts (DPA) concluded its run at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, one audience member felt a deep connection with their Chinese New Year Spectacular.

“I really like the message of hope, and the message that … we are all one people in this world,” said Mr. Martineau, Senior Marketing Coordinator for a Los Angeles-area attraction. “Even … though our culture is different from Chinese … the messages, I think, are from the heart.

“I loved the stories that were told in the dances. The costumes were beautiful; it’s … really one of my favorite shows I have ever seen.”

Mr. Martineau, who is responsible for coordinating special events that may represent Chinese, Japanese, and other cultural arts, added that watching the talented dancers and performers share their gifts was something close to his heart.

“Oh, it was absolutely beautiful. I was just so moved by the show, the dancers were amazing.

“I liked the tumblers … you know, the more acrobatic ones, they are a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the graceful lead female dancer as well … she was so beautiful in her spins,” he added.

Mr. Martineau also found parallels between the cultural variety found in China and diversity reflected in the United States. “One thing I learned is that China, in some ways, is like America, [as] there are many different cultures within China.

“The Tibetan dancers: I was really impressed to see how much energy there was in that dance. The Mongolian dances … so many different cultures is what really was surprising to me, and you know, that makes [it] something we can understand because as Americans we have many different cultures within our country, too.”

Mr. Martineau concluded that in addition to the talent and skill of the performers, there was a unique element to the Divine Performing Arts’ Chinese New Year Spectacular.

“I think it’s the message of hope, and the positive ideals that come from the show [that] make it a little different,” Mr. Martineau said. “I have seen a lot of performances where there are talented dancers, but this has … something special to it, because it’s a message of hope and of goodwill for all people, and that really makes it something special.”
