It’s easy to wallow in sorrow over misfortune, but positive ingenuity is a great remedy, for it helps to assess the facts and adjust properly.  L.M. Montgomery’s short story “Lilian’s Business Adventure“ is filled with just such ingenuity that enables an individual to rise above negative circumstances while also bringing new joy and meaning to life.

Left With Little

When the story begins, Lilian’s father has recently died, leaving the 17-year-old girl and her mother in financial ruin. Since her mother’s health is delicate, Lilian must find a way for them to make ends meet.

The weight of her duties and loss bear down upon Lilian as she makes her way into the dry-goods store on Randall Street. Her sorrow grows more bitter as her old friends, Esther Miller and Ella Taylor, spurn her as they exit the store.
