John Hollander, the American poet and literary critic, died at age 83 over the weekend.
The New York Times reported that his cause of death was pulmonary congestion.
“In an age that came to prefer loose, garrulous poems filled with confessional sensationalism and political grievance, John Hollander was a glorious throwback,” poet J. D. McClatchy told the Times in 2010 of his work.
He added: “His materials — high intelligence, wit, philosophical depth, technical virtuosity — looked back to an older era of poetry’s high ambition. His work never pandered; it astonished.”
He was Sterling Professor Emeritus of English at Yale University and he previously taught at Connecticut College, Hunter College, and CUNY’s Graduate Center.
