We’ve used recessed lighting fixtures in many houses because they’re installed flush with the ceiling and provide illumination in an understated way. The fixture is a popular choice of designers because it’s a simple, yet stylish lighting solution. For example, specialty small, recessed lights are an attractive way to highlight artwork in a niche or over a fireplace mantel. In a long narrow hallway with a low ceiling, recessed lights are often a solution for providing illumination without taking up space. In a room where overall lighting is needed, recessed fixtures create a nice ambiance.

Before adding any lighting fixture in a room, look at the electrical system of the house in the area where the lighting will be added. If there is not a nearby existing electrical line to tap near the ceiling location, an electrician will charge $1,839, which includes labor and material, to install six recessed fixtures with trim rings through the existing drywall ceiling. A homeowner who has some electrical experience and tools can buy the recessed light for $400 and install it and save 78 percent. But if a new power source is required, definitely hire an electrician who is experienced and licensed.
