Hot toddies are popular in many northern countries. They are typically made with liquor, sugar, water, and sometimes spices. In Ontario, Canada, however, a common way to make this warming beverage is with ginger ale and honey rather than water and sugar.

Hot toddies are traditionally drunk before going to bed. In Ireland and Scotland in the not too distant past, they were used to relieve the symptoms of a cold or flu.

1 ounce whiskey or brandy
1 teaspoon honey
1 cup ginger ale

Put the whiskey or brandy in a clear glass or mug. Heat the ginger ale (but don’t boil) and pour over the liquor. Stir in the honey. Sip slowly and feel the warmth coursing through your body.
