In “Mere Christianity,” C.S. Lewis wrote, “A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”
Hans Christian Andersen brought these words to life in his fairy tale “The Wicked Prince,” in which he showed that pride and overwhelming passion reduce a person to a downward view and, therefore, a downward course.
To Conquer All
This 1840 Danish fairy tale tells the story of an extremely proud prince who, unsatisfied with his own kingdom, decides to conquer the world. He pillages and destroys all the countries he conquers, leaving horrific suffering and fear in his army’s wake.
