Glühwein, a mulled wine, is a traditional holiday drink from Germany. But you can have it in New York City, too.
Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner features his authentic Glühwein recipe on the holiday cocktail menus at each of his New York restaurants: Upholstery, Cafe Sabarsky and Cafe Kristall.
The Gluhwein originated in the Middle East in the 18th century and many cultures put their own unique twist on the spices.
Glühwein
1 bottle of Zweigelt wine
1 orange (sliced in half with rind)
1 whole vanilla bean
Zest of 1 lime
Splash of port wine
Cinnamon stick
Spices, 1 tsp of each: juniper berries, allspice, star anise, pink peppercorns
Place all ingredients in large pot and simmer for 30 minutes. Before serving, add honey until desired sweetness is reached (approximately 5 tbsp for whole pot).
