SAN JOSÉ, Calif.— Forest Williams, former San José councilman, gave a speech at the VIP reception at the San José Center for the Performing Arts following the opening performance of the Shen Yun Performing Arts Spring Tour 2009 on Friday night, May 15.

“I’d like to thank everyone for being here. This is sort of a dream fulfilled. When I was on the council, I was the liaison for the arts commission, and it was my job to secure art, to put art in its perspective in terms of [the] diversity of the city, to meet the artistic needs of all of our citizens,” Mr. Williams said.

“Because we are the largest city in the area, and we’re growing. We’re over a million people now, and we’re going to continue to grow. And all of the diversity required that the arts needs here in the city should be fulfilled.”

He truly felt that the Shen Yun company would fill the needs of his community so he dedicated himself to arranging everything, including finding the venue for the performance. “So we have it [Shen Yun] here, and we’re very pleased, and the performances were outstanding. I loved everything. ... It’s just the grace. Its like floating on air.”

He went on to say that he thought he was swimming when he watched the dance Nymphs of the Sea. “All of the artists put themselves into it and delivered a great performance, so I’m looking forward to your coming again, and good luck!

“Now when you go to Oregon you probably won’t have to create the water because they’ve got enough there.“ The audience laughed. He expressed his appreciation that the company had come to San Jose and concluded by saying, ”We look forward to your coming again.”

According to the company’s Web site, New York-based Shen Yun is a triumph of collaboration, bringing together leading dancers, choreographers, and musicians from around the world. Its productions are unique in being not only entertaining but also educational, enriching, and uplifting.

The company’s rich repertory breaks new ground by focusing on the authentic cultural heritage of classical China while also giving artistic treatment to the world around us. Each year, Shen Yun premieres an entirely new program of dances, songs, and musical scores.
