Esperanza Spalding received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist over the more popular Justin Bieber and Drake.

A 26-year-old native of Portland, Spalding edged out the baby-faced Bieber and Toronto rapper Drake for her first Grammy Award.

A jazz composer and bassist, Spalding burst out onto the music scene after being personally selected by U.S. President Barack Obama to perform at his Nobel Peace Prize ceremony and concert in 2009.
