LONDON—Shen Yun, Divine Performing Arts’ (DPA’s) multi-cultural mix of music and dance was reflected in the West End Theatre audience on the first day of the 2009 World Tour’s London programme on March 3.

Among those who stood to applaud DPA was a student of music who wants to use East and West in her work and a man who interprets and translates Slavonic languages.

“I am influenced by Asian music,” said Ms. Cover, a student of commercial music in Westminister. “I combine a lot Asian and Western music so it is very inspiring to me, and I am looking forward to composing some Asian music too.”

She thought the performance was, “absolutely lovely. It’s very elegant. It’s simple, but the movements are so powerful at the same time. With its simplicity, it’s very peaceful and yet energetic at the same time, and you get a really good feeling from it. So I really liked it, it’s amazing.”

Mr. Wyrzykowski,a linguist, also liked the broad spectrum of genres. “My favourite part was probably the tumbles. My mum enjoyed the soprano singer. I think I enjoyed ... the combination of the digital arts and ... performers. That was really great, I really enjoyed it,” he said.

Chinese dance is refreshingly dynamic and expressive. Ancient legends and heroic figures come to life through its leaps, spins, and delicate gestures.

When asked what touched him most about the show, he said, “I think, probably, the message. Nowadays, it’s very important to connect to your past, to some spiritual tradition, to have some set of values that would help you in real life. And these values, these days, are quite often forgotten. I think that’s the message, and it’s quite important.”
