LOS ANGELES—Mr. Athons, a retired costume designer for movies who has worked for Warner Brothers, Paramount, 21st Fox, Disney, MGM and others, and his wife Helen, attended the Shen Yun Performing Arts show played to a full house at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Saturday evening, Feb. 13.
Being a costume expert, he was impressed with the colorful, handmade Shen Yun costumes. “Fantastic, really beautiful,” he said.
The show, performed by the New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts Company, is part of a world tour that aims to enthrall audiences globally with traditional Chinese performing arts, and the authentic Chinese cultural traditions.
Mr. Athons said, “I enjoyed watching the dancers, it was tremendous, learning that American choreography is different than Chinese.”
The Shen Yun Orchestra, with its medley of Eastern and Western instruments, really impressed Mr. Athons. “One sees a mixture here. One sees a lot of Chinese people here, which is a wonderful thing.”
The traditional Chinese tales and legends told through story-based dance were something new to Mr. Athons, but he was getting familiar with this way of telling stories.
“I think the dancing is done very well. I understand what the story is, what they are performing. I think it’s wonderful,” he said.
He also said the singers were great. “Very good, excellent!”
Mrs. Athons agreed with her husband. “It’s a beautiful show.”
What stood out for here was “the femininity of the show and the costumes. The dancing is great.”
