OTTAWA—Dr. Li, a medical researcher from China, was one of the audience members present at the Divine Performing Arts show held at the Ottawa National Arts Centre on the afternoon of Jan. 3.

“I feel that one day, the show will be performed in mainland China. I strongly believe that,” he said.

Dr. Li and his wife came to Canada to visit his daughter and grandson two months ago. This was his first time to come to the National Art Center to see a show. The magnificent scenes excited him. He said: “The artistic level of the show is very high, the techniques are also very good, the performers are very well trained. The scene is so magnificent, [I] felt very happy after seeing the show.”

His wife put her own perspective on what she saw as “quite special,” and “particularly beautiful.” A lavish display of colorful costumes and state-of-the-art animated backdrops accentuated the on-stage design, and the performances are “different from what we can see in China,” she said.

No other Chinese performing arts company boasts such a body of talent. According to the DPA website, among the artists are winners of top international competitions in dance and music, including highly accomplished choreographers and composers.

Their daughter treated her parents and her daughter to the show.

She believed the show is effective in helping people understand traditional Chinese culture as well as the current situation in China.

“All the performances reflect reality,” she said.

Ms. Zhang, who was there with her nine-year-old daughter, felt “very proud.”

“I noticed that most of the audience members are Westerners,” she said. “That’s so unexpected. They are very much interested in Chinese culture ... they’re all saying ‘Happy New Year’ [in Chinese]. Since I am Chinese, I feel very proud.”

Her daughter liked the dance, The Monkey King Triumphs.

“I liked the program with Sun Wukong in it,” she said. “I didn’t see it enough and would like to see it again.”
