PASADENA, Calif.—On New Year’s eve, a Chinese immigrant who had just arrived in the United States from Shanghai, attended the Divine Performing Arts show currently playing at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in LA.

The show’s portrayal of Chinese traditional culture pleasantly surprised Mr. Wang, a teacher.

“The first-class music, costumes, stage design and dances are refreshing. I’m having a wonderful time,” said Mr. Wang during the intermission.

“It’s beautiful. The artists’ basic techniques are great. They are so professional. The music creation is excellent without a doubt.”

Mr. Wang named three pieces that were among his favorites.

“The men’s Tibetan ethnic dance is the best. It is so masculine. The women exquisite performance in The Udumbara’s Bloom demonstrated terrific techniques, and the actor in The Monkey King Triumphs most beautifully manifested the agility of Monkey King.”

Jeff, who invited Mr. Wang to the show, came to the U.S. eleven years ago. He was also deeply impressed by the lavish DPA production.

“In general, the art work is perfect—the music accompaniment, the orchestra, the stage setups, the colors on the costumes, and the acting.”

This was Jeff’s third time seeing a DPA performance. He thought the lyrics of the vocal soloists held “very profound meanings.”

“Especially for people like us from China, it makes us think. Men should walk the path that God leads us -- this is pure Chinese culture, it’s traditional. The Chinese Communist Party culture is all about fighting and killing, that is not our culture.”

Mr. Wang said he is a loyal fan of famous tenor Guan Guimin and remembered his voice from China. He still has all of Guan’s tapes and was delighted to hear he would be singing in the second half.

Mr. Wang added that while he had seen many performances, he thought the DPA’s was different. “The artists put more thought into it and it has deeper meanings. It’s inspiring.”

He hadn’t planned to attend the show initially, but decided to come when Jeff insisted. And he didn’t regret a bit of it. He said he was going to buy a DVD so that he could savor the show again after he got home.

“I fell in love with it. I had a beautiful evening.”
