The holiday season is the perfect time to cozy up a home. This is especially true if the weather turns chilly. A warm, welcoming house is just the ticket to making your guests and family feel at home and loved.
Tread Lightly With the Seasonal Decor
“Don’t go overboard with the seasonal decor,” Joy Lynskey, founder and CEO at Jewel Toned Interiors, told The Epoch Times. You want to embrace the festive nature of the holidays without displaying your entire collection every year.
Instead, Lynskey suggested creating an overarching theme and sticking with it.
“Pare down anything that doesn’t work under that concept,” she said.
For example, for Thanksgiving, if you focus on pumpkins one year, try to focus on fall leaves the following year. This makes it more interesting for your guests.
“Make sure you occasionally purge your seasonal decor; although some may hold sentimental value, using the same items every year can also make a home smell musty,” Lynskey said.

Clear the Clutter and Excess Furniture
It’s essential to eliminate magazines and books.“Too often, we walk into a home and see a stack of books or a pile of magazines. If they’re serving no purpose, remove them, at least for the holidays,” Lynskey said.
It’s important to clear spaces to make it easier for guests to navigate the room without worrying about bumping into anything.
Lynskey suggested relocating extra furniture.
“If it’s not obvious that your ottomans are meant for extra seating, store them temporarily,” she said.
Layers Make a Room Feel Cozy
Layer luxury fabrics to create a warm and inviting room. Chunky holiday knit throws or faux fur add texture and are not only appealing to the eye, but also invite you to curl up with a hot toddy. But don’t go crazy—you want enough to create a comfortable feeling. But if you pile too many throws or pillows on your furniture, it will be difficult for guests to sit comfortably.

Ditch the Overhead Lights
Stick with soft lighting ideas and eliminate harsh overhead lighting. She suggested turning off or dimming overhead lighting and using all of the available lamps in your home.
“Your home will already feel more comfortable,” Healey said.
Use string lights to create a festive feeling.
“String lights can be wrapped up your banister or placed outside your front door to give your guests a warm welcome into your home,” Healey said.

Set the Mood With Candlelight
Nothing says “comfy-cozy” like a candle’s warm glow. They can be placed throughout your home, including on coffee tables, side tables, in bathrooms, and on a mantel.Lucious Scents Create Comfort
Scent matters more than people realize. It’s the first thing that people notice when they walk into a house. If your home is musty or has an animal odor, it’s a turn-off.Just the scent of baking or holiday meals cooking can be inviting to your guests and family. Use a simple clove-studded orange or pine sprigs to naturally create a nostalgic scent.
Wreaths and Dried Flowers
Dried flowers and foliage are gorgeous ways to decorate your home during the winter months. These often retain their scent. You can make a wreath inexpensively by repurposing a thrift-store grapevine wreath. To cut down on supply costs, decorate it in an asymmetrical way. In other words, only cover half the wreath. This is an opportunity to use dried flowers so that you can also introduce a delightful scent into your home.
