Shins fans awaiting a follow up to 2007’s peerless Wincing the Night Away will have to sate their appetite with this, James Mercer’s debut collaboration with always intriguing producer Dangermouse.
Mercer’s wonderful turn of phrase remains intact and the general production is perfectly judged. In many respects this could have been a Shins album, with the electronic touches they added to Wincing meaning the beats on tracks such as album highlight ‘The Ghost Inside’ almost sound like a natural progression for Mercer.
Although this won’t blow the mind of even the most committed Shins fan, it is still an exceptionally well-crafted addition to both artists’ canon.
