Life can seem oppressive and dark, but, as O. Henry shows in his short story “The Third Ingredient,” hope should always be fostered. Even in darkness, kindness and love will never fail to shine through.

Hetty Pepper returns home with a rib of beef under her arm. Unfortunately, she has just been fired from her job. She plans on making a hearty beef stew, having a rest, and setting out the next day to find another job.
