DJ Shadow’s Entroducing remains the benchmark for instrumental hip hop, and sadly Blockhead aka Tony Simon falls far short. Attempting to weave together multi-layered sounds and textures from many different instruments, movements and cultures, the overall effect is quite jarring. Less of a “musical journey” and more a self-indulgent and detached trip around the suffering of modern life, this fails to inspire, and chucking in odd excerpts from different global music does not do enough to compensate. The two drug addicts arguing on ‘The Daily Routine’ is pretty unpleasant and voyeuristic.
