Bait and Switch

The more you know about wine, the more you are likely to see the scam before falling for it.

Bait and switch is the conscious act of putting something up for sale that appears to be valuable and replacing it with something that has none of the original intended value, but which is priced to indicate that it's authentic. jazz3311/Shutterstock

Sometimes it’s simply just a mistake, but it seems always to backfire against the consumer.

And sometimes it is a nefarious strategy intended to put one over on unsuspecting diners, almost always with the intent of making a lot of money.
