Andrew Lang’s translation of “The White Cat,” attributed to Madame la Comtesse d’Aulnoy, follows a prince as he sets out on a quests for his father. While on these quests, the young prince has encounters that make him rethink how effectively appearances reflect interior dispositions.

After realizing that his three sons have grown strong and brave, a king fears that they might overthrow him. To delay his retirement, the king sends his three sons on quests. He tells them that whoever brings him back the most beautiful dog will win his kingdom.
