Rustie - Glass Swords (Warp)
Take an iconic 80s film montage, whack in 70s prog rock and blend it together with woozy hip hop, R‘n’B and mid 90s Ibiza rave and you have Glass Swords. The incredibly brief but astounding title track is quickly followed by ‘Flashback’, its synth-gorged retro nuttiness reminiscent of this melange of genres but sounding like nothing else at the same time. It typifies the album: hyperactive and totally preposterous. Many people may be completely befuddled by it but tracks like ‘Ultra Thizz’ demonstrate the sheer joy and enthusiasm that runs throughout the album. Probably best experienced after drinking a gallon of cola downed with a tonne of sherbert.
