COLUMBUS, Ohio—“The costumes were just absolutely wonderful,” said Ken Scruggs, president of Midwest Aerial Photography. He saw the costumes presented in Shen Yun Performing Arts, at the Ohio Theatre on March 3.

Although Mr. Scruggs does not consider his work as a technical photographer to be art, he does know design principles. “It’s the color, and the shape, the designs are very good,” he said, again referring to the costumes.

New York-based Shen Yun is known for the handmade costumes which the company’s dancers and vocalists wear. The costumes are original designs made of silk. Each dance has its own rich color palette. Shen Yun presents both ethnic dances and classical Chinese dance.

“I think the colors are done very well together—very pleasing to the eye for me to see,” he said.

He praised one dance in particular because the pastel-colored peach dresses with long sleeves so impressed him. Ladies of the Tang Palace wear pale peach, while the projected background includes deeper and brighter shades of peach, apricot and gold.

The dances performed by the Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company offered a cultural perspective to Mr. Scruggs: “It’s a window into a different world of culture. My wife and I, we like to travel. We enjoy to learn [about] and see different cultures and different areas. We’ve been to China, but we have not seen a show like this before.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the spirit of traditional Chinese culture, which had been all but destroyed by the Chinese Communist regime.

Mr. Scruggs also found the animated backdrops interesting, feeling that each represented different areas in China.

Mrs. Scruggs added that she, too, enjoyed the show: “I’m impressed, impressed.”
