On June 14, the United States will celebrate the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army. It was on that date in 1775 that the Continental Congress established a colonial military force authorized to represent all 13 colonies of the budding country. This newfound army became the United States’ first national institution.
Since then, more than 41 million men and women have served in all branches of the U.S. military. While in service, many of them acquired positive individual attributes, ranging from maturity and discipline to skills in various trades. After they returned to civilian life, what they had learned in uniform strengthened the country as a whole.
