For most kids, Halloween is all about costumes and bringing back a huge stash of candy. But for one Missouri kid, instead of hauling just candy, he would also be trick-or-treating for canned goods for the most amazing reason.

Eleven-year-old Nickolas Blair, from Kansas City, had a most generous idea one Halloween; he decided to collect foods for donation to a non-profit organization that feeds the homeless. “I wanted to make those people feel better and feel more like, ‘Hey, we’re special,’” he told KMBC-TV.

He said it was his faith that inspired the kind act of giving.

Nickolas decided to write up an ad, which was posted on the Greenwood website, to connect with as many people in the community as possible. “Trick or Treat for Hunger,” it was titled. It read:

I am on a mission to collect CAN goods this Halloween instead of candy to help those in need. I will be going around door to door collecting them, please if you CAN help me out I would be so grateful.

His mother, Natalie Blair, posted the letter on her Facebook page along with a caption:

I cannot express how happy I am for my son Nickolas ... he came up with an idea last year to help those in need instead of receiving candy asking for can goods help those in need ... We decided to try it out in Greenwood Missouri where his grandparents live ... They put it on the Greenwood site and we have had a great response so far he has such a good heart! I’m extremely proud of him and I’m excited to see how this turns out for him.

One of Natalie’s friends responded, “So amazing! Tell him I admire him greatly!”

Besides just helping himself with a hoard of candy that Halloween, Nickolas also enjoyed knowing that he'd helped a few less-fortunate people who were without food. Keep it up, young man!
