Album Review: The Bookhouse Boys

With a Spaghetti Western intro track a la live Richard Hawley this album splices an “it doesn’t matter what it’s called” English punk edge with pop, hacienda sounds and even a Calexico-like calypso feel.

With a Spaghetti Western intro track a la live Richard Hawley this album splices an “it doesn’t matter what it’s called” English punk edge with pop, hacienda sounds and even a Calexico-like calypso feel. Unhinged vocals on ‘Tonight’ are strongly reminiscent of the deep dark Triffids and ride a strung-out surf-rock wave that crashes into ‘Shot You Down’, unfolding further mystery with value-added female vocals.

A cascading full sound gives the excitement of chance meetings out there on the brink that might, at some point, deliver riches despite a possibly un-earned prophetic religio-ambivalent undertow.

Bet they’re great live. I want more.
