DALLAS—Mayra Negron, a vice president for Bank of New York Mellon, came to see Shen Yun Performing Arts with her young daughter for the second year at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas, Jan. 4.

“It is beautiful. This is our second year coming; she loves it very much, just—it’s impressive,” said Ms. Negron.

Ms. Negron said his young daughter is interested in mythology, so she was delighted with the stories she saw in Shen Yun. Through classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun tells stories ranging from ancient myths and popular folklore to pieces set in the modern day. Pieces included stories from the epic “Journey to the West,” and the tale of the mythical boy Ne Zha and the dragon.

The New York-based Shen Yun revives 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through music and dance. The culture, said to be divinely inspired, was almost lost under the current regime in China.

Shen Yun’s mission to revive the culture touched Mr. Negron. Through the combination of the arts, dance, and theater, the performance delivered a clear message, she said.

Ms. Negron said he sensed how traditional values, spiritual beliefs, and aspects like meditation, which developed from ancient times, were carried over into the modern day through Shen Yun’s stories.

She added that the stories “show how it has transformed through the decades and centuries in itself.”

“The costumes, the music, just the whole history that it presents, it’s really worth it,” Ms. Negron said.
