BERKELEY, Calif.—When Steven Poitras, creative services director for KRON-TV attended a Shen Yun performance at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, California on Dec. 15, he was amazed by the digital backdrop showing different scenes that matched the dance performance.

“How the artists worked together with the background,” Poitras said. “[It’s] really, truly interesting.”

“The precision was amazing,” he added. “I mean these people are just, they’re right on, every moment, every time, every mark is hit perfectly. And that’s what’s fascinating to see. And the artistic expression, really beautiful.”

“Oh, the artistry is like phenomenal,” said Joe DeCarlo, vice president, international operations and senior consultant at Balanced Scorecard Institute. “I think the combination of the dance, and the choreography with the technology that’s in the background is something that I’ve never seen before. And it was seamless.”

According to its website, Shen Yun’s backdrops reflect China’s multifaceted geography, regions, and dynasties.

“The theme, it was very cultural, so we were able to learn a lot about the Chinese culture, so you’re not only watching the art, you’re also getting a lesson in history, which is so valuable,” said Margaret Pierattini, associate director at First Republic Private Wealth Management. “So I think everyone that we sat with enjoyed themselves tremendously.”

“I really hadn’t been exposed to Chinese art at this level and I’m very impressed,” said Ashish Kasturia, director at Visa. “It’s very nice.”

“The sleeve dance, the fairies, the colors of all of the costumes are just fabulous, everyone is so graceful,” said Karen J. Koistinen, retired local census office manager for the U.S. government. “This is just a spectacular show. It’s stunning from beginning to the end.”
