NEW YORK—Divine Performing Arts (DPA) ushered in the year of the Ox with its “Chinese New Year Splendor” at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday, filling the theater with the rich sound of the renowned DPA orchestra.

Ms. Caponen, an artist, musician and writer who works in film making, said she came with the expectation that she wouldn’t enjoy the show. However, she ended up being pleasantly surprised.

“It’s very, very colorful, very graceful,” she said. “I just thought the choreography was really good and the costumes; I really liked the use of fabric. And the dancing—I really enjoyed the dancing.”

She said her favourite piece was “Dragon Spring Drummers,” a dance using octagonal drums that brings to life the buoyant, fun-loving spirit of China’s indigenous folk culture.

She loved the “energetic” aspect of the dance, she said. “I thought that was fun.”

Ms. Caponen also enjoyed the two contemporary pieces in the show, “Dignity and Compassion” and “Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution.” Both depict the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China in different and moving ways. Falun Gong is a spiritual discipline rooted in Chinese culture that was outlawed by the Chinese regime in 1999.

“I have actually done a little bit of Falun Dafa,” Ms. Caponen said. “Not just the philosophy part, as much as that sounds good, but even the physical practice is very relaxing.”

DPA is a New York-based performance company founded by leading Chinese artists that is seeking to revive China’s traditional culture and present it to audiences around the world through Chinese classical dance and music.

“I really just enjoyed watching the show,” said Ms. Caponen
