SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Ms. Nancy Andersen, a commercial artist, said she felt invigorated seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Sacramento Community Center Theater, Jan. 15.

Sitting right up in front, Ms. Andersen could hear every step of the dancers, the movements of their fans, and see the performers’ expressions right up close.

“It’s getting me on different levels,” Ms. Andersen said. “Just the color and the movement.”

Ms. Andersen has headed her boutique design firm Andersen Creative Design since 1989, experienced with all stages of commercial art and advertising. Being involved in creating art herself, color was one of the first things Ms. Anderson noticed about New York-based Shen Yun’s production.

“[It’s] a very interesting use of very vibrant colors,” Ms. Andersen said. Shen Yun performs traditional Chinese dance, with hundreds of costume pieces made for the performance every season. With the help of the costumes and animated backdrops, Shen Yun takes the audience on a 5,000-year journey of Chinese civilization.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture, built on values like benevolence, wisdom, and propriety, and respect for the heavens, which carry through in the art forms.

“I think it’s lovely; it’s very engaging,” Ms. Andersen said. “I love to see their expression and faces, and the costumes; it’s beautiful. The colors are spectacular.”

Ms. Sherry Dorso, who attended the performance with Ms. Andersen, had felt connected to the performance on many levels as well.

“It’s very multifaceted,” Ms. Dorso said. “There’s an energy that’s being exerted that’s beyond what we see on the stage.”

“Beyond what they’re actually doing, there’s something else happening,” Ms. Dorso said. “I can’t really name it, but there’s something else happening.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has four touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit Shen Yun Performing Arts.
