The last of 10 members of a Baptist group being held in Haiti after attempting to take 33 children out of the country in the aftermath of January’s devastating earthquake was convicted Monday.
Laura Silsby, the leader of the of the missionary group, was given a jail sentence of three months and eight days, the exact amount she had spent in custody awaiting her trial, prosecutor Jean-Serge Joseph told the Associated Press.
Silsby returned briefly to her jail before going to the Port-au-Prince airport.
The nine other missionaries were released at the end of April when a Haiti judge dropped kidnapping charges against them, saying that the children were handed over freely by their parents.
Silsby was still charged with arranging illegal travel, where she faced a maximum of three years.
