Dave Tipper’s 2003 downtempo album Surrounded is one of the best, and most underrated, electronica records of all time. While Broken Soul Jamboree doesn’t quite hit those heights, it does present a Tipper boldly striking new ground not only as an artist, but for electronica as a genre. Combining immaculately produced beatscapes, rolling bass, tabla, and deep skittery electronics with what can only be described as “circus style” melodies, the care that Tipper takes is apparent. Like off-kilter soundtracks to imaginary films, this is psychedelic but accessible, with live instrumentation complemented by Tipper’s killer sense of rhythm.
