Micachu and the Shapes - Chopped and Screwed (Rough Trade)
High concept is the name of the game with this collaboration between Micachu and the Shapes and the London Sinfonietta. Set the task of recreating a technique of sound manipulation (Chopping and Screwing) favoured by men in Houston’s hip hop community famed for their habitual abuse of cough syrup, the Sinfonietta scratch and scrape their way through half an hour which veers between the engaging and the forgettable. The compelling grind of ‘Low Dogg’ or the skittering clatter of ‘Everything’ are diverting but at other times the album steps into the kind of “avant-gardism” which is likely to make this record a niche interest.
