The predomination of female solo artists is one of the key trends in recent musical history. It may be this sheer volume and quality which sees artists like Mara Carlyle passed over. This record originally slated for release by EMI almost didn’t see the light of day, and that would have been a genuine travesty because it is an accomplished and interesting record. Carlyle’s effortless vocals combine beautifully with understated jazz instrumentation and soaring strings. Wonderfully languorous songs like ‘Bowlface en Provence’ and the jaunty follow-up ‘Pearl’ are perfect showcases for an artist who should no longer be flying under the radar.
