This long awaited debut from the folk troubadour from Chorlton, Manchester, is an accomplished though mixed affair. The first two tracks are sublime and dreamy, autumnal melancholy – very much in the mould of classic Nick Drake, the lovely guitar work enhanced by subtle string arrangements. This style continues with ‘The Fridge’ and ‘Further’ – mellow and comforting reflections on family heritage and the past. Yet ‘Hit You From Behind’ with its skiffle hoedown verges on the grating, and as the album progresses into the jauntier territory of ‘Baby Dea’ and the slightly inconsequential closing track there’s a sense that proceedings have peaked too soon.
