Album Review: Jennifer Pike and the Bergen Philharmonic – ‘Sibelius Violin Concerto’

April 8, 2014 Updated: October 26, 2018

The young British violinist, Jennifer Pike, gives an outstanding performance of the concerto sympathetically supported by Andrew Davis and the orchestra. She makes light of its technical demands producing a lovely sound reflecting the heart of Sibelius and his unique world.

To sample, listen to the opening of the first and second movements, the latter with a beautiful melody introduced by the woodwinds then taken up by the soloist. This generously filled CD also includes six of the most popular suites, including fine performances of ‘Karelia’, ‘Finlandia’ and ‘The Swan of Tuonola’ all reflecting Sibelius’s love of his nation, people and countryside.
