BRISBANE, Australia—“It was brilliant, it was beautiful, part of it was like a visual meditation” was how president of Noosa community radio station, Geoffrey Peckitt, described Shen Yun Performing Arts performance at the Concert Hall, QPAC, on Wednesday evening Feb. 4.

“It’s a brilliant, colourful journey through history and it’s just magical,” he said.

Mr. Peckitt who is also a radio presenter, ‘breakfast with the oracle,’ clinical hypnotherapist, counsellor, interpretational behaviourist, and author of Reflections in Time: A Personal Journey. He is currently writing his second book.

Mr. Peckitt had the highest praise for Shen Yun. He was totally blown away by how the performers presented the ancient Chinese culture on stage and the energy that they exuded. He felt it was a beautiful energy from within them.

“What struck me was that all the performers looked as though they were enjoying it. They had beautiful energy about them. It was just incredible,” he said.

“It is an expression, of who they are, and what they are portraying and that expression comes through. It’s like something that shines off the stage and you can feel it. It’s energy. It’s that spirit that comes from them, and you feel it. … It draws you up onto the stage with them.”

Mr. Peckitt was also thrilled with the colourful costumes and the animated digital backdrops portraying beautiful scenes behind the dancers.

“It’s just the way the performers work together and the colours, and the way the colours work with the backdrops. It just works and it takes you into different emotions and different feelings. It’s just incredible, absolutely incredible.”

Shen Yun’s costume artists collect countless designs of traditional attire, ranging from those of emperors, ministers, and generals to the everyday clothing of the common people. They tailor and recreate hundreds of new pieces each season, according to the performance company’s website.

The backdrop provides striking scenery that extends the stage and at times interacts with the dancers on stage, bringing the audience into the story and serving to enhance the storytelling.

Another aspect of the performance that stood out for Mr. Peckitt was how well the large group of dancers performed together.

“The way the movements are, it’s almost like it takes you into another space. It was incredible,” he said.

According to Shen Yun website, “Among the many aspects that distinguish Shen Yun are the dancers’ synchronisation, rigorous discipline, wholehearted dedication to their art, and their emphasis on moral character. These qualities are also integral to traditional Chinese culture, which is believed to be divinely inspired.”

Mr. Peckitt would like to convey this message to the performers – “What I saw tonight was incredible and you’re all incredible. You all have a beautiful energy about you and it permeates the whole theatre.”
