Spring cleaning might get all of the attention, but there’s definitely something to be said for spring decorating. Take your cue from the changing weather to make some season-appropriate swaps to your decor as well, and you’ll end up with a fresh new look for spring.

Swap Out Wall Art

Something as simple as adjusting the artwork can instantly change the look of a room and make it feel like new.

“I love to do a spring refresh in the bedroom,” designer Karen Vidal said. Try swapping out heavy, luxe drapes for lighter, fresher fabrics, such as linen or cotton.

Switch Your Bedding

Opt for lightweight fabrics and brighter colors for a spring refresh.

“Give your bedroom a quick spring makeover by replacing your bedding,” designer Young Huh said. “Remove the heavy duvets and replace them with a lighter blanket, and change out your pillowcases and decorative pillows with breezy colors.”

Install New Lampshades

If you’re tired of your ancient lamps but don’t have the budget to purchase new ones, update them with a simple lampshade.

“Switching out plain lampshades on a table or floor lamp for a brighter option is a quick way to add a jolt of refreshing spring color to a space,” design blogger and author Will Taylor of Bright Bazaar said. The colorful piece can also be used to tie in other accents with similar colors in the room.

Cover Your Floors

“Don’t forget about your flooring!” designer Tom Stringer said. “Fresh, inexpensive sisal or hooked cotton rugs for porches and hallways add an element of spring to a space.” You can keep these rugs out for the summer months too; they’ll make your space seem lighter.

Add in Colorful Accents

Color can really bring some cheer and happiness into a space—and isn’t that what spring’s all about?
“To brighten up a room come springtime, use playful accessories like vintage vases, trays, pillows, and other accent pieces in pastel colors,” Leura Fine, founder and CEO of Laurel & Wolf, said. “A soft color palette will add a bright and airy feeling to any room.”

Fill Your House With Greens

After months of snow, rain, and freezing temps, the best way to celebrate spring is by bringing a few fresh plants indoors to breathe some life into a room.

“Succulents have been trending like crazy thanks in part to their ease of care, but also because of their spring-like dusty shades of greens, grays, and purples,” designer Sarah Vaile of Sarah Whit Interior Design said. “It’s the perfect accessory to introduce a bit of nature to a room, while also creating a spa-like feel.” You can experiment with other houseplants, too, or even fresh flower arrangements.

Revamp Your Outdoor Space

“Nothing says springtime like outdoor entertaining,” Emilie Munroe of Studio Munroe said. “Make an inventory of your outdoor accessories and refresh with fun, functional pieces—like a large stainless-steel insulated beverage tub for ice and drinks.”
