In the midst of the exceptionally busy working world, it’s easy to reach for that extra cup coffee or energy drink in an attempt to stay alert. It’s simple to justify making such a decision as it’s quite convenient to grab a dose of caffeine and continue on with your day. The problem, however, is the subsequent crash that accompanies almost all caffeinated beverages. That crash, typically occurring around the mid-afternoon, can result in fatigue, drowsiness and irritability. As a result, many people will reach for another caffeinated snack or beverage, continuing this unnecessary cycle. Fortunately, there are a lot of ways to up your energy naturally, and all it requires is eating the right kinds of foods. Superfoods to be exact.

1. Nuts

Livestrong recently published an article analyzing some of the best foods that can help you power through your day. it’s no surprise that among those superfoods were almonds, which can “help stabilize blood sugar levels for the rest of the day,” and in turn, can help manage your energy levels. And, of course, there are  a lot of other reasons to eat almonds as well.

2. Avocados

If nuts aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other superfoods that can help boost your energy levels as well. Avocados, rich in antioxidants and healthy monounsaturated fats are always a great food for fuel.

3. Olive Oil

Combine that avocado with olive oil, and it can actually “slow down the emptying of the stomach so you feel satisfied longer.” Together, avocados and olive oil can prevent that energy crash by keeping you satiated throughout your day.

4. Berries

What article about foods for fuel would be complete without some berries? Blueberries are extremely low in calories and are antioxidant rich. The combination can increase your mental focus, as the article reports, “people with age related memory problems performed better on learning and memory tests than the control group after drinking blueberry juice for two months.” Seems like swapping blueberry juice for that caffeine loaded cup of coffee may not be a bad idea.
