It is loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep,” but it includes elements of dystopia and steampunk long before they were cool. When production began in 1948, it was supposed to be France’s first animated feature (and it sort of was), yet it would take three decades for it to be completed to its creators’ satisfaction.
“They jumped and then went into the animation—I’ve never seen that before and that was actually pretty awesome.”
Art director Mahsa Ghorbankarimi said Shen Yun gave her “an out-of-this-world feeling.”
The Anime Expo is an annual event by the non-profit Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation. This year marked the 20th anniversary, dubbed “The Year of the Fan.”
